THE YING QUARTET

Sunday, 4 October, 2009 at 7 p.m.
Monday, 5 October, 2009 at 8 p.m.

Subscription Concert No. 1

The Ying Quartet occupies a position of unique prominence in the classical music world, combining brilliantly communicative performances with a fearlessly imaginative view of chamber music in today’s world. Now in its second decade as a quartet, the Yings have established themselves as an ensemble of the highest musical qualifications and regularly perform in many of the world’s most important concert halls. At the same time, the Quartet’s belief that concert music can also be a meaningful part of everyday life has also drawn the siblings to perform in settings as diverse as the workplace, schools, juvenile prisons, and the White House. The Ying Quartet is known for its diverse and unusual performance projects, including their ongoing LifeMusic commissioning project, created to expand the rich string quartet repertoire by creating music that reflects contemporary life.

Subscription Concert No. 2

After 25 years of friendship and music-making, Ani Kavafian, Andre-Michel Schub and David Shifrin - each a true virtuoso and a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center - come together as a trio with undeniable chemistry. "The spontaneity, the excitement and the fun we have playing together is beyond what we ever anticipated," they said. Combined they have performed with nearly every major orchestra around the world and in recital at the major concert halls. Violinist Ani Kavafian is one of the most sought after chamber musicians in the country as well as a frequent soloist and professor of violin at Yale University. Clarinetist David Shifrin has appeared in critically acclaimed recitals across the country and is a frequent orchestra soloist with major orchestras. As a piano recitalist, orchestra soloist and chamber musician, Andre-Michel Schub has been praised by critics and audiences since his career began over three decades ago.

Subscription Concert No. 3

“Chamber music is the only true form of music and the most authentic expression of a personality,” insisted Gabriel Fauré. Having taken its eponym’s guiding principle to heart, the Fauré Piano Quartet is now widely regarded as one of the leading chamber groups in the world. Within a short space of time it has conquered the great concert halls of London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels, Geneva, Hamburg, Milan, Buenos Aires and elsewhere. “They attract superlatives wherever they go,” wrote The Strad following a concert at London’s Wigmore Hall, while the Süddeutsche Zeitung praised them for a performance that “brought tremendous pleasure by highlighting interpretative details that had scarcely ever been heard before.” The ensemble was formed in Karlsruhe in 1995 to mark the sesquicentenary of Fauré’s birth and was soon winning national and international awards, including the 2008 “ECHO” Classics Chamber Music Prize and London’s Parkhouse Award.
